Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor as well as Jan O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared in some commercials prior to moving from Illinois' Wheaton to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as the model of Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy film, She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included TV shows in independent film, as well as numerous other roles. Donna Abandando is her first appearance as a leading role in ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde squad secretary was played from 1993-96. Each of the seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by the Drama Series. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
